Accommodation

Volunteers (and tourists) will be living in the Shuar community Arutam. Volunteers have their own house with basic accommodation (rooms, beds and small kitchen).

Volunteers eat with villagers and the diet consists of a traditional Shuar diet with consideration of any cultural differences, vegetarians or other special needs. The stable diet is manioc, plantain, sweet yam (potato like root crop), vegetables, chilli, meat and occasionally rice or noodles. Another stable part of the diet is the Chicha or Nijiamanch (in Shuar). The Chicha lightly alcoholic and starchy traditional drink, consisting of primarily boiled and fermented manioc.

If volunteers wish to stay with a family in the community, this can also be arranged.

Volunteers are also invited to participate in normal community activities such as sports, meetings, making crafts and are encouraged to help in the cooking or collection of firewood etc. Since villagers have a busy schedule and spend a lot of time farming, volunteers are also requested to follow the instruction for the normal eating hours which are normally:

Breakfast  : 7.00 - 8.00

Lunch        : 12.00 - 13.00

Dinner      : 19.00 - 20.00
